Top 10 Baking Tips

  1. Preheat the oven.
  2. Use the freshest ingredients possible and check that your baking ingredients are not expired! People often overlook this one because they think that baking ingredients are immortal, but they’re not
  3. Use room temperature ingredients, i.e. eggs and butter.
  4. Measure the ingredients accurately.
  5. If you want to separate an egg white from the yolk, gently drop the egg about 4 inches from the bottom of a bowl. This will help crack the egg without any stray eggshell pieces potentially breaking the yolk or falling into your eggs. Directly finish cracking the egg into the bowl and gently scoop out of the yolk with your fingers. Transfer yolk to another bowl or discard (see and click on photo below).
  6. Use unsalted butter. I find that unsalted butter tends to be fresher and just tastes better.
  7. Use parchment paper to line baking sheets for easy removal (and clean up).
  8. For cookies, leave two inches in between each cookie so they do not bake into each other.
  9. Don’t crowd the oven.
  10. Do not over bake things. Baking can be deceiving because baked goods may look unfinished before they cool. It is best to bake within the suggested times.
