Chosen Foods: Avocado Oil & Chia Seeds

A good friend of mine who works at Chosen Foods sent me some of my favorite natural food products, avocado oil and chia seeds.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is something that I recently started incorporating into some of my cooking. Avocado oil has a great mild flavor and is not unlike a light olive oil and makes for a great substitute and, in fact, has a much higher smoke point (520 degrees F, to be exact) than olive oil (335 degrees F).

Avocado is full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, filled with antioxidants, and cholesterol free.  The avocado oil that Chosen Foods sent me is called AvOmega and each bottle contains about 25 Hass avocados. Below is an excellent recipe using Avocado Oil:

Avocado Oil Caprese

1 -2 medium tomatoes, sliced

2-3 shallots, caramelized

4 – 6 ounces of mozzarella, sliced

2-3 tablespoons of Avocado Oil

1 – 2 tablespoons of 18 year-old Balsamic Vinegar (Optional)

Instructions: Arrange ingredients to your liking, serve, and enjoy!

Chia Seeds

Yes, chia seeds can probably be nurtured into a ch-ch-ch-chia pet, but in fact, are better served as a superfood. Chia seeds are packed with omega-3, fiber, antioxidants, and even protein! Furthermore, for those of you who are gluten-free, these little guys are for you and are a great way to add more nutrients to many recipes.

Chia seeds may aid in weight loss, in the lowering of blood sugar, and support a healthy heart. The chia seeds that Chosen Foods sent me are called AztecChia and they contains double the fiber, double the protein, and over 800 mg more omega-3 than ground flax.

Chia Seed Limeade

1 tablespoon of chia seeds (they get nice and chewy, almost like teeny tiny tapioca pearls)

¼ cup of fresh lime juice

1-2 sprigs of fresh spearmint

2-3 tablespoons of sugar

3-4 cups of sparkling water or ginger ale, to taste

Instructions: Combine all ingredients together in a large pitcher and refrigerate for at least an hour to allow the chia seeds to get nice and chewy. Serve and enjoy!
